Join fellow LGBTQ+ outdoors enthusiasts, CAS & The Poplar Creek Prairie Stewards to learn about & care for native Illinois prairie habitat!
Volunteer steward Jenny Flexman will guide us through the beautiful Poplar Creek Prairie and teach us to collect native plant seed which will be used to spread important species that provide the structure needed for pollinators, birds, and other animals to call the prairies home. Then, we'll close with an optional socially distant picnic lunch - BYOBlanket and lunch!
Located in Hoffman Estates, Carl Hansen/Poplar Creek Forest Preserve, can be accessed off the west side of Route 59 between Shoe Factory Road on the north and Golf Road (Route 58) on the south. The site is part of 700 acres that volunteers have been restoring, and includes an Illinois Nature Preserve (the highest quality designation of protection a natural area can achieve in IL). Poplar Creek Prairie Stewards has been actively protecting and restoring these lands for 31 years.
Participants must wear a face covering or mask when within 6 feet of others. We recommend bringing a water bottle, hat, and sunscreen and wearing weather-appropriate outdoor clothing, including long pants, and sturdy, close-toed shoes.
