Local Bird Conservation Walks: Montrose Point and Beach

  • Montrose Point Chicago, IL United States (map)

The third entry into our occasional series highlighting places where important conservation actions are making better habitat for birds. Come and get bird conservation literate! This series is not just for birders - all who want to learn about local conservation are welcome.

This famous point jutting into Lake Michigan is the first landing spot for many migrating birds in the morning. Managed by the Chicago Park District, formerly a big lawn, a honeysuckle hedge and a groomed beach, this site is now home to a beautiful bird sanctuary and natural dunes and hosts the greatest number of bird species in Illinois by far. Come explore the site and learn about the conservation actions that made this special place what it is.

Leader: Lauren Umek, Chicago Park District. Park on Montrose Drive near the wooden entrance portal to the Bird Sanctuary.

Accessibility and safety info: The trip will take place on an accessible asphalt trail and a sidewalk. Protect yourself against the sun and possible insects. Bring water.
