October “Lakewatch” walks with Woody Goss

  • Steelworker's Park 87th Street & South Lake Shore Drive Chicago, IL United States (map)

Join CAS board member and trip leader Woody Goss for this special October migratory waterbird series at Steelworkers Park!

Lakewatching is a particular style of birding that can involve fleeting experiences of fast-flying birds both near and far, including large numbers of migrants not seen on land. Woody will demonstrate the art of lakewatching through both binoculars and a spotting scope.

October is a great month for dabbling ducks like northern pintail and green-winged teal, as well as diving ducks like Scaups and all three Scoter species. It’s also a good month to catch migratory gulls, such as Bonaparte's, as well as terns such as Forster’s and common terns, and a smattering of shorebirds species. Horned grebe and red-throated loon flybys are possible. As always in the fall migration period, anything rare could show up!

A spotting scope for the group will be provided, but feel free to bring one if you have it.

These walks will occur Sunday Oct 1st, Wednesday Oct 4th, Sunday Oct 8th and Sunday Oct 22nd. Registration is required.

Meeting Spot: Turn east onto 87th Street off S. DuSable Lake Shore Drive and follow it all the way east until it ends. You will see the parking lot there.
