Light reduction for all buildings along Chicago's lakefront is critical to reducing bird strikes.

Residents and building owners should be aware that all evening light displays to show appreciation for those on the front lines of COVID-19 need to be turned off after 11 pm for the protection of birds that will migrate through Chicago every night over the next month.

The Building Owners and Managers Association has reminded its members to extinguish any non-essential exterior and interior lighting from 11 pm to sunrise until June 15th in order to continue the success of the important Lights Out! Chicago light reduction program.

Millions of birds travel along our lakefront every spring and fall and can be fatally attracted to brightly lit buildings where they are killed or injured by flying into window and lobby glass.

Chicago Bird Collision Monitors recovers as many as 6,000 birds that are injured or killed by collisions each year in downtown Chicago.
