Save Birds in Techny Basin!
Meadowlarks, savannah and song sparrows, spotted sandpipers and more are nesting on the ground at Techny Basin. Join us for a fun, easy workday in a beautiful bird habitat. We’ll snip the heads off weeds and save these birds from the mower!
This property is part of an important corridor of greenspace along the West Fork of the North Branch of the Chicago River in Northbrook and Glenview - and it is threatened by invasive weeds. Last year mowing for weed control destroyed young birds on the nest. This year birders are working with prairie advocates and the MWRD to address the weed problem in a more targeted way.
Dates:
Wednesday June 9; 8-10 AM
Thursday June 10; 6-8 PM
Sunday June 13; 8-10 AM
Gloves, water and snacks will be provided. If you have them, bring a pair of long-handled garden shears. We will be clipping the flowering heads of reed canary grass, and trying to locate bird nests. Wear long pants, long sleeves, a hat and waterproof boots or shoes.
Please let us know if you are coming and whether you can bring a pair of shears by emailing cas@chicagoaudubon.org. Park overlooking the basin behind the Sheraton at 1110 Willow Road - enter off Founders’ Drive north of Willow.
These workdays are organized by Tamima Itani and Jeff Bilsky (IOS board members) and Judy Pollock (CAS board member) with support from Metropolitan Water Reclamation District, Sally Stone, Rob Sulski, Henrietta Saunders and Chicago Audubon Society.
