Photo: Black-crowned night heron by Derrick Johnson
Hello everyone,
Our species count wasn’t as high as last week but we still saw some wonderful birds. It was a day of nest discoveries. We found a Yellow Warbler, Barn Swallow, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, and a few Robins nesting at various spots on the island. A pair of Baltimore Orioles was hanging out near a new and fresh-looking nest and our local House Wrens were working on their nest at the base of the light bulb in light pole #40.
Randy reported that he heard a Tufted Titmouse near the lawn bowling court, and although Titmice are common in the suburbs, they are a very rare visitor in the city. Another highlight was one, and probably two, White-eyed Vireos, also an uncommon visitor.
We had the heron trifecta with a higher number than usual of Black-crowned Night Herons. A few migrant warblers remain, with American Redstarts being the most plentiful, by far.
