Photo: Black-crowned night heron by Derrick Johnson
Hello everyone,
Probably the most notable aspect of this week’s walk was what we didn’t see. Our huge flock of Cliff Swallows was no longer hanging out on the south side of the museum. In fact, not a Cliff Swallow was to be found today. I guess they have begun their southward journey, although I don’t want to admit that fall will be upon us soon.
The Purple Martins and Barn Swallows are still here, although there were fewer Barn Swallows than the past few weeks. The Eastern Kingbirds are still around and the Green Herons and Great Blue Herons were plentiful. We saw a juvenile heron and hoped that it was another Yellow-crowned Night Heron but it was definitely a Black-crowned Night Heron. Osaka, our resident BCNH was in his usual place in the Japanese Garden. We also had two Spotted Sandpipers walking on the lily pads in the Columbia Basin and a Mama Red-winged Blackbird with two cute juveniles by her side.
BIRDERS: Gary, Marian, Eric, Jennie, Annie, Cheryl, Mark C., Kristin, Paul, Jane, Tracy, Marisa, Renate, Pam, Stacey and her adorable 4 ½ year old Amelia, and welcome to Michelle.
