A Racial Equity Book Club Forming for CAS Members and Friends - Join Us
This is a time when many of us are reflecting on our history of racial inequity and its impact on us and our society - as are we here at CAS. We’re offering our members and friends a new way to make a connection - in a book club focused on racial equity.
Our first book is by Dr. Drew Lanham, The Home Place: Memoirs of a Colored Man's Love Affair with Nature. Drew was a speaker in our Compelling Voices series last year, and he was featured in #blackbirdersweek and the One Earth Film Festival last month. (If you haven’t watched the One Earth Film Festival program “Outdoors While Black”, we highly recommend it. Register at the link above and then watch any time.)
He’s a wonderful writer - here’s a quote from a Star Tribune review: "we see the landscape and skyscape through the eyes of a trained scientist and born naturalist; we come to understand fully what sources Lanham’s deep regard for the outdoors… When you’re done with “The Home Place,” it won’t be done with you. Its wonders will linger like everything luminous.”
The Kenyon Review also has a thoughtful review of Dr. Lanham’s book
After we read the first book, the group can determine future books.
Our first meeting will be in the week of 9/14. If you are interested please click the button below and fill out the form which will help us select the best time.
We encourage you to purchase the book from a Black-owned bookstore:
