#2
Melissa Brummerstedt, Oriole, acrylic on canvas
#3
Sarah Osburn. This piece is of a Tree Swallow, which was my first migrant bird that I saw in 2024!
#4
Angela Risinger. A colored pencil drawing of a Golden-crowned Kinglet.
#5
Kristen Romanowski. With its noisy chack and grating screech, the Common Grackle may not be the standout species of spring migration. They can be a nuisance to farmers, and even bird lovers have been known to think, "Grackles? They look cool. Too bad they suck, though." So while grackles are gloriously gregarious, they're not for everybody. And that's okay—warblers and kinglets can stay cute, and grackles can keep shining as the lovable misfits they are. Because if you look closely, you'll see how the grackle is both luminous and dark—iridescent as a parking lot oil slick, and just as beautiful, complications and all.
#6
Sophia Lentine. I saw my first Brown Thrasher in Florida and I’m excited to see them make their way back to Chicago this Spring!
#7
Sophie Lucido Johnson. I’m looking forward to seeing the whole rainbow of migrators that come through Chicago — it’s one of the most special occurrences in North America, and we get a front-row seat! I am generally obsessed with birds and I love drawing them — particularly the bright colors on the spring migrators. I’m so excited to celebrate them all once again.
#8
Harrison Taylor. Ruby-Throated Hummingbirds who visit the feeders my yard are my favorite bird migratory birds!
#9
Patricia Casey Joyce. Sandhill Cranes on a nest!
#10
Carolyn Kraft. This little Carolina Wren flew into a window at our cabin in Southern Illinois. I quickly captured his profile and drew this in colored pencil on matte board.

Kat Jarboe. My submission depicts a male indigo bunting returning for spring migration. I love indigo buntings due to their unique bright color!
