Bird Conservation Volunteers Needed

Eastern Meadowlark by Stephanie Reierson posted to our Facebook Group.

CBA has two volunteer opportunities this summer: one for those who know birds and one for anyone. Make a difference for birds!

  1. MWRD reservoirs - Cook County suburbs. This year, we are surveying the Reservoirs of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District for birds. Many sites have good access and parking. For those that don’t, we will work with you and the MWRD to get access. We have established a successful relationship with the agency through our work at Techny, thanks to Jeff Bilsky.

This opportunity requires 3 visits - two in June and one in the first half of July. The visits need to be completed by 9:30 AM. The protocol is easy for those who know birds by sight and sound - walk as much of the site as is accessible and keep a bird list.

    Locations:

    Edward Howell in Markham

    Dr Mary Woodland in Lynwood

O'Hare Underflow and Gloria Alitto Majewski near O’Hare

    St Michael Reservoir in Palatine

Tinley Park Reservoir in Tinley Park

    Addison Creek in Bellwood

Robbins Heritage Park and Midlothian Creek Restoration Project in Robbins

Richton Park Detention basin in Richton Park

  2. Lincoln Park, Chicago. Work with a team to monitor rat contraceptive containers.

This requires a four-block walk once every two weeks., checking 2 containers per block, and a mandatory training on July 15th or 16th. The day is flexible according to your needs.
