Wooded Island Bird Walk

  • Wooded Island, Jackson Park Meet at the west side of the Columbia Basin Chicago, IL, 60637 United States (map)

Hello everyone,

It was family day in the Swallow world with lots of juveniles begging for food and their busy parents obliging. There was a lovely female Wood Duck with 2 medium size babies following along. And we spotted a nice first summer male Orchard Oriole with his handsome black throat feathers. We were treated to two Great Egrets, both of whom posed nicely for our photographers.

We had 2 Black-crowned Night Herons in the Japanese Garden. Osaka was standing sentinel until another BCNH came along and chased him away from his fishing spot. Or, perhaps the first bird was the new one and Osaka came back to claim his territory. One of the two herons caught a yummy looking fish for its breakfast.

Eastern Kingbirds were everywhere and we had two cute White-Breasted Nuthatches in one tree on the soccer field. There was a mulberry tree in the former rose garden that attracted a lot of birds, including two Great-crested Flycatchers.
