Hello everyone,
What a gorgeous morning it was; the kind of day that makes putting up with Chicago’s summer heat and winter cold worthwhile. The birds seemed to like it too, those who have not begun their migration south, that is.
Chimney Swifts and Purple Martins are still here in full force. I keep expecting to find that they have left, but not yet. There are still plenty of Great Blue Herons in residence as well as Green and Black-crowned. Plus a few Great Egrets. However, we had no Caspian Terns and no Red-winged Blackbirds so we can tell that migration has indeed begun.
We didn’t see Osaka when we first entered the garden but they flew in and landed in their spot a few minutes after we arrived. I guess they wanted to say good morning.
The highlight of the day was a juvenile Broad-winged Hawk that flew in and perched in a dead tree. This is an unusual and very welcome visitor to Jackson Park.
