Wooded Island Bird Walk

  • Wooded Island, Jackson Park Meet at the west side of the Columbia Basin Chicago, IL, 60637 United States (map)

Hello everyone,

The weather was hot and miserably humid. I think that the birds were as tired out by the heat as we were. Except for the Purple Martins and Barn Swallows – there were a lot of both and they were flying around in their usual energetic manner, eating all the insects they could find before their migration.

Osaka was perched in its spot in a tree in the Japanese Garden. We also were lucky enough to have the heron trifecta in the garden itself with Green and Great Blue Herons in addition to Osaka. All of the herons and the Great Egret were found in large numbers on this walk. And Eastern Kingbirds were everywhere we looked.

Yellow warblers are still here and will soon be joined by the migrating and confusing fall warblers. Two flyover Ospreys were a very nice surprise.

The highlight of the day occurred when a Green Heron flew in and perched at the top of a tree near the golf driving range. A local Eastern Kingbird was not at all happy with this interloper and proceeded to attack the heron, buzzing around its head over and over. The heron held its ground and eventually the Kingbird gave up, leaving the heron to enjoy the view from its lofty perch.
