Wooded Island Bird Walk

  • Wooded Island, Jackson Park Meet at the west side of the Columbia Basin Chicago, IL, 60637 United States (map)

Hello everyone,

It was a gorgeous early fall morning and we enjoyed the presence of many migrant birds, as well as our regulars.

The Chimney Swifts are still here although their numbers are diminishing. Osaka was snoozing in a tree when we arrived in the Japanese Garden but we later saw him in his usual spot when we were across the lagoon on the music bridge.

Baby American Goldfinches were being fed by their parents throughout the walk. Two Great Blue Herons put on a show for us when they dramatically circled around the Columbia Basin repeatedly. We had a great view of a Great Crested Flycatcher in the former rose garden. And we had wonderful looks at a lovely male Black-throated Blue Warbler who posed nicely for several photos by our photographers. We saw several other species of warblers too, some confusing, some obvious. Thank goodness that some of the warblers keep their usual plumage in the fall!
