Wooded Island Bird Outing

  • Wooded Island, Jackson Park Chicago, IL United States (map)

Hello everyone,

It was raining at 8:00am on Saturday but 13 hardy birders made their way to the park because they all knew, and rightly so, that bad weather means good birding. And indeed, it was good birding.

We were treated to not one, but two Brown Thrashers. Brown Creepers seemed to be on every tree and we were lucky to spot three Eastern Towhees. A late Eastern Kingbird was present as were two Common Yellowthroats. White-throated and White-crowned Sparrows were seen and heard throughout the walk, including a large flock at our meeting place that made the ground look like it was alive (which in a way, it was!). Unfortunately, a Dark-eyed Junco was with the sparrows, which is a sure sign of impending winter weather.

Both types of Kinglets were flitting about and we had a nice variety of confusing fall warblers, including an Ovenbird. Northern Flickers were all around us; in the trees and on the ground foraging for insects.
