Wooded Island Birding Outing

  • Jackson Park Chicago, Illinois (map)

Hello everyone,

The young birds are growing up and venturing out. We had a lot of Eastern Kingbirds throughout the walk and they were very active. There was a group of teenage Mallards on the lagoon without a parent in sight so they might be on their own now. They were peeping to one another continuously. A Double-crested Cormorant was sitting in classic Cormorant pose drying its wings. Osaka was waiting for us in its usual spot in the Japanese Garden. It doesn’t seem to mind our presence at all.

We had a flyover Monk Parakeet, a bird we rarely see in Hyde Park these days so that was a treat. There’s a mulberry tree in the former rose garden that’s full of ripe fruit and the birds were taking full advantage of the opportunity for a hearty breakfast. We had multiple Cedar Waxwings, Robins, Kingbirds, Goldfinches and Vireos feasting on the delicious fruit.

At the end of the walk we were happy to see and hear a Red-shouldered Hawk in the parkway between Stony Island and Cornell. It was calling repeatedly and making quite a fuss about something.
