Wooded Island Birding Outing

  • Jackson Park Chicago, Illinois (map)

Hello everyone,

Migration is definitely winding down so our species count is much lower this week, but as always, we had some interesting sightings.

A Bald Eagle made an appearance again this week, majestically soaring over the museum. Eastern Towhees were visiting and they are always so nice to see. We had four adorable Winter Wrens and one even posed for Paul to take its picture. Wood Ducks are still present in large numbers and they look fresh and beautiful in their fall coats. White-throated Sparrows are still abundant. We found a very tiny Wooly Bear caterpillar who had about equal parts of brown and black, continuing proof that we shouldn’t have a bad winter.

The highlight of the day was the large flock of Hermit Thrushes who were feasting on wahoo berries, among other things. It was a remarkable sight.
