Wooded Island Birding Outing

  • Jackson Park Chicago, Illinois (map)

Hello everyone,

It was a beautiful winter morning with sun and blue skies, but it was chilly, especially in the wind. The birds didn’t like the cold either so very few came out to visit us.

We were pleased to find three beautiful Common Mergansers among the waterfowl. A couple White-throated Sparrows were foraging and finding as many seeds as they could. A fast-flying Peregrine Falcon raced south over the lagoon. The surprise of the day was a Golden-crowned Kinglet in the center of the Island. That’s a rare sighting for us in the winter.

BIRDERS: Jennie, Mike, Mark C., Luther, Mark W., Daniela, Jeff, Mark M., Yuqing, Caterina, Sarah, Amir, Jillian, Madhu, Marisa, welcome back to Chicago Mark N. and Sandra N., and welcome to the walk Keuang, Jillian and Fatima.
