Wooded Island Birding Outing

  • Jackson Park Chicago, Illinois (map)

Greetings everyone,

It was a colorful fall day and both the trees and the birds were out to impress. The leaves on the trees are turning to the beautiful shades of fall and we were fortunate to see some birds with their extra vibrant colors showing.

While many of the migratory birds have left for warmer wintering grounds, the Golden-crowned Kinglets seemed to be everywhere. It was fun watching them flash their golden crowns.  We were also delighted to welcome a Pied-bill Grebe back to the park.

The highlights of the walk were the sightings of 2 Purple Finches and 6 Eastern Bluebirds. The male Purple Finch looked like it had been dipped in raspberries while the female gave us excellent views of her facial pattern and coarse streaks. The Eastern Bluebirds were going in and out of a tree cavern on the island with the decoys. They were cooperative to give us all great views. We can only hope that they stay around!
