Ann Hetzel Gunkel

Ann’s avian interests developed by learning from her (now collegiate) birding son as he grew up. Countless outings and adventures later, she’s now a bird nerd, too. She has served as a Chicago Piping Plovers monitor since the inception of the project at Montrose Beach in 2019. Her social media stories and photographs of Monty & Rose’s piping plover family have shared enthusiasm for protecting this endangered species and have appeared in local media, newspapers and journals. She is also an avid backyard birder, developing a bird and butterfly sanctuary and wildlife habitat in her Chicago garden.

A philosophy professor by profession, Ann is grateful to pursue her passion for birds, conservation and the environment by serving on the Board and as Editor and Communications Chair for the CAS.
