Wooded Island Birding Outing

  • Jackson Park Chicago, Illinois (map)

Hello everyone,

It’s that time of year…the summer residents have left and the winter residents haven’t all arrived yet. Although our species list isn’t long, we had a few interesting things to look at.

We saw a Red-tailed Hawk being chased relentlessly by a murder of crows. The crows are very persistent birds. The Wood Ducks are still here and there were a lot of them. We also had high numbers of Dark-eyed Juncos. There were not very many Robins on the walk itself and the reason was that they were holding a convention in the grassy area between Cornell and Stony Island. Robins were flying about all over the place!

We started out with an average number of Canada Geese on the lagoons but suddenly a huge flock flew in, honking and carrying on. We hoped to see a Bald Eagle chasing them but alas, no eagle was found. I don’t know what spooked the geese but they were in quite a tizzy.
