Wooded Island Birding Outing

  • Jackson Park Chicago, Illinois (map)

Hello everyone,

It was a cold, gray morning and our expectations were low, but we did pretty well all things considered. We made our winter goal of having more bird species than birders, so we were happy about that.

We were greeting with a Red-shouldered Hawk flyby. It was a quick look but we were happy to see this beautiful bird. A nice flock of Redheads flew overhead too. A coyote was spotted running along both frozen lagoons. There may have been two of them but we didn’t see two at once so we can’t be sure. We were surprised to find one Red-breasted Merganser and one Common Goldeneye in the small patch of open water in the harbor.
