Wooded Island Birding Outing

  • Jackson Park Chicago, Illinois (map)

Hello everyone,

Our resident summer birds came out to visit us this morning. We had the heron trifecta, although we only had one Great Blue Heron, which is a bit odd. Perhaps our local GBHs are still raising their young over in the Oak Woods Cemetery rookery.

An adorable raccoon was in its usual tree cavity and turned itself upside down to show us its paws and face. We enjoyed seeing four Great Crested Flycatchers and we heard and/or saw many Eastern Wood Pewees singing their distinctive song. Indigo Buntings were present and one perched on top of a broken off vertical dead tree trunk and sang its heart out while it posed beautifully for us.

The highlight of the morning was the hard to spot Scarlet Tanager, who kept moving out of sight behind the leaves. We persevered and everyone finally got a good look at this gorgeous bird.
